These rats are cousins of the Holbrooks and came to us on 7/26/16.
Fostered by Moshe in Brooklyn, NY.
UPDATE 8/5/16:
“The babies are very cute and they have been getting lots of handling.
It was clear from the beginning that the Moms name is “Sweety” because she is so small and so sweet. She is a rat with a lot of energy (I’ve never seen her with her eyes closed, they’re always open even when I creep my way to the cage), but she will willingly come onto my hand and she does not bite.”
UPDATE 8/16/16:
“Their personalities are really coming out, and they are eating tons. Most will happily come onto my hand at any time, but some won’t and most pick up their speed when I try to pick them up. They are very playful; they lick fingers and gently try to bite off the nail. They were introduced successfully to two adult rats, who sometimes get their hands nibbled on as well. They like to chase my finger and lick it if they are pinned down by it. Anyway they are a lot of fun.
Sometimes when I take them out of the cage they are surprisingly curious and chilled, while sometimes they are surprisingly skittish, but they are improving every day.
UPDATE 9/6/16:
“The babies are doing well; they are a lot of fun. They will come for food when I open the cage–they will come even if I’m rustling a bag–they will eat food while being held, and they can be relaxed when being held.”
UPDATE 9/18/16:
Strawberry is a particularly cute, trusting rattie.
Marshmallow is a beautiful rat, often the first to come when I open the cage.
Peanut Butter and Jelly are particularly playful.
Charlie is a somewhat picky eater. He seeks action and likes a chance to go out of the cage or get some food.
Curious George is happy to eat his food on my hand instead of running back to the cage to eat it.
Mom Sweety really deserves her name, she is very very playful in the cage, never getting into any kind of dominance fights.
UPDATE 11/15/16:
“Sprite: Although he is huge, he is a sprightly young man with boundless energy. He uses this to play with the other rats and run happily around during free-range time. He has been the biggest proponent of free-range time since a wee pup when he would climb off the table to explore the floor. He is the pack-leader of the cage, and doesn’t hold back when challenged. He becomes aggressive when Shortcake tries to steal his food and ignores his warning squeaks.
Shortcake: The smallest of all the bucks. He is sweet and enjoys eating while being held even if on his back. Playful. Sometimes he is paranoid of getting attacked and will freeze or run when I try to pick him up or if another rat comes to play with him. He is a pretty balanced rat with no extreme character traits.
Curious George: Named “Curious” because he was the first to explore when this litter first opened up their eyes and he remains particularly curious. He is probably the most relaxed and playful of all. He has a small white spot on his head, unlike the other boys. He has been “reserved”, until there are no more males remaining, because he is a good influence.”
