These boys came to us on 12/19/21 after they were surrendered to a reptile store.

Fostered by Will in Boston, MA.

UPDATE 12/28/21:

“All the boys will come up to the edge of the cage when they hear me. They’ll come to my hands if the cage is open. They’re all nice rats but shy. Dex is easily the most independent and will be seen alone more than the others.”

UPDATE 2/15/22:

“Hex is super duper friendly both to rats and people – of the two foster boys he’s definitely more outgoing, and he definitely was the social link between my boy and Dex when the cage hierarchy was being worked out. He’s very snuggly, and likes to burrow his head into the crook of my arm every time I take him out of the cage. At first I thought I was bothering him by how often he would give me small bites, but I think that it was my misunderstanding, and that he’s actually just a bit of a rough groomer, and nibbles on your skin a bit hard. However, he’s been very receptive to stopping biting when I squeak at him, so I think this isn’t a problematic behavior, just something to be aware of!

Dex is a lovely and friendly, but admittedly meek rat. He definitely is the least territorial in the bunch, and will often be doing something by himself, but seemingly just because he likes things that way! He loves to come up and say hello when you approach the cage, and even likes cheek/chin scratches! He definitely has a significant aversion to being handled, and having hands over him or to his side, but he doesn’t seem to get aggressive or stressed, he just likes to run away and doesn’t seem to feel very stable unless he’s held close to one’s chest. This is something that I think is getting less scary to him, but definitely slowly! However, he’s very patient with me and remains super friendly even though I have to pick him up from time to time, and he and Hex get along super nicely – they snuggle all the time and Hex never seems to dominate Dex in an aggressive or unfair way.”
