UPDATE 5/7/25:
I like to call Moose the Eeyore of the group. He typically lounges and mopes around the cage, but his personality shines during free roam. He explores every corner of the room and climbs vertically when given the opportunity. When we sit in chairs, Moose will climb up our pant legs and sit on our laps. Additionally, he acts as the mediator of the group! If he hears a fight getting out of hand, he steps in to separate the other boys, usually Merlin and Marshmallow.
Malakai is the large, cuddly member of the group. Out of all the boys, he sits contentedly on our laps and gets along well with everyone in the cage.
Maximus is a very social rat who enjoys human interaction. He often approaches the front of the cage when we pass by and doesn’t mind being handled. Inside the cage, he is frequently found cuddling with Moose or Malakai.
The two youngest, Merlin and Marshmallow, are spry and energetic! They are always found together, whether inside or outside of the cage. If they aren’t cuddling, they are likely roughhousing. Merlin is easier to handle and enjoys spending time with us. Marshmallow, on the other hand, is more hesitant and not as fond of being handled, although he will happily sit on your lap if you’re on the floor with him. Both have big personalities and often try to assert dominance over the older boys.
Overall, these boys are very playful and social. None of them has ever bitten, and they are all highly motivated by food. They love free-roam time and eagerly wait at the front of the cage at our designated time each day. During free roam, they enjoy exploring new areas and items, and they love fishing for snacks out of a bowl of water!
