UPDATE 11/28/20:

“Both boys are coming out of their shells a bit now! Jeffy is the more outgoing of the two and the more food motivated but both boys poke their heads out when they hear a person coming. They’ll take treats from hands and learned the click sound I use to call them for treats very quickly. They’re both impeccably litter trained; there was one accident outside the box the first day they arrived and nothing since. Being lifted out of the cage makes both boys nervous but they’re snuggly and calm once they’re in your arms and not in midair. They’re the first rats I’ve dealt with who really enjoy a wheel!

At first glance, the boys look very similar but Jeffy is actually a dumbo while Ricky is standard ear. They’re very sweet together and I haven’t seen them fight once.

The areas we’re working on are all about fear. Both boys are weirdly freaked out by normal household sounds like conversation in the same room as them or the dishwasher running. I’m not sure if that’s new-ness or if they were used to being in a room away from the main household but I’m slowly increasing their exposure. They definitely don’t have much experience of kids, even quiet ones. Also, the boys are scared by anyone trying to pet them inside the cage. Outside the cage petting is making good progress but inside is really alarming.”
