UPDATE 7/29/21:

“The girls are really settling in. Both are starting to come out of their shells and are allowing for more handling.

Prior to coming into foster care, Pepperoni had bit a cage mate and also her mom. I was told she has some food aggression. I think that living just with Peanut, as opposed to a group of 6, has calmed her down a bit. I also change up the layout of the cage significantly every week to reduce any possessiveness. She still runs from me when I attempt to catch her up, but yesterday I was able to scoop her up without cornering her for the first time. Great progress! She was also the first of the two to venture onto my shoulder!

Peanut also runs from hands, but is the more confident rat. She will climb all over my lap if I sit still and is also the first to explore something new. I tap my fingers on the ground to play and I can tell she wants to, but she isn’t quite confident enough yet. She does run from me when I pick her up, but I move slow. She will tell you if she does not want to be picked up. I only pick her up if she does not turn her face up at me. One day I pushed this and she held my finger in her mouth for a few seconds with slight pressure. I held still and she let go. I gave her a minute and when I returned, I was able to pick her up.

These girls are so cute and petite. I love seeing them play and gain confidence and trust. They are fun to watch! With a little bit of time, love, and patience, they will be a lot of fun to interact with too.”
