Oreo & Marshmallow came to us on 12/12/20 as parents of an oops litter. They were separated for momma to raise the babies, but moved back in together once the babies moved out and both had been spayed & neutered.
Fostered by Sophia in Leominster, MA.
ADOPTED!
#2020841N, “Oreo”, Rat, Agouti, Hooded, Standard Ears/Standard Coat, Male, DOB: 04/12/2020, Spayed/Neutered?: Yes 12/15/2020
#2020842N, “Marshmallow”, Rat, Himalayan, , Dumbo Ears/Double Rex Coat, Female, DOB: 07/12/2020, Spayed/Neutered?: Yes 01/06/2021
Special need: Oreo is quite nervous and will need a patient adopter willing to continue working with him and giving space when needed. They also may not be adopted to a home with a plastic-bottomed cage, as Marshmallow has a history of chewing through them.
UPDATE 2/4/21:
“Their reintroduction went smoothly and they are now living together without any problems. As I had hoped, living with another rat has helped Oreo make excellent progress with his socialization. His behavior is much more outgoing and attention-seeking now, though he is still easily frightened by sudden movements or loud noises. He will accept pets on his head and body most of the time as long as I go slowly (and especially when he is distracted by treats), but he is still very afraid of being picked up – I try to avoid petting him on his flanks because he will panic thinking he is about to be grabbed. He is more receptive to pets and even being briefly picked up when he is away from his cage. He is still quite reactive, but as long as I pay attention to his body language and give him space when he needs it, he is not difficult to work with.
Marshmallow is also doing awesome and is a total sweetheart. It was easy to earn her trust in a few days once she figured out I had food and treats. She loves veggies and has eaten every kind I have offered her so far. I would say she is lower-energy compared to other young females I’ve had, but she is no couch potato either. She loves to explore, jump, and climb and isn’t super cuddly, but she still enjoys pets and head scratches. She absolutely adores Oreo and follows him around everywhere. She really, really loves to chew plastic, so I try to give her lots of other toys to chew on to keep her from chewing the shelf liners and litter box in their cage.”
