UPDATE 9/10/24:

They are still skittish, but when they’re roaming outside they will sometimes approach me. They take food from my hands and will handle occasional pets, but they get scared when I’m paying full attention to them and will run. They don’t like being held, but will walk into my lap on their own terms if I’m sitting in a spot that is accessible to them.

As for the litter box, they use it at times but not 100%. I’d say around 3/4 of poop makes it into the litter box and 1/4 out, but when they’re free roaming they never poop on the floor. Somehow they seem to know that it’s okay to poop inside the cage but not outside.

UPDATE 5/17/24:

“Bubbles and Blossom are coming out of their shells a bit!

They are enjoying free roam time and will eat from my hand freely now. Occasionally they will approach me and will handle occasional pets but still have no interest in being picked up.

I have been doing some handling desensitization with them, which appears to be working so far, but they are still on the skittish side.

I’m excited to get to see new sides of their personalities! 🙂

UPDATE 4/18/24:

“Blossom (black and white) is a sweet, curious girl. She loves peanuts and cuddling in a hammock with her sister, Bubbles! She is somewhat timid so as of right now she prefers to stay in the cage and definitely needs plenty of enrichment inside the cage. She doesn’t like being held, but will occasionally tolerate being pet on the head and back. She loves chewing up toilet paper tubes, digging in hay, and climbing!

Bubbles (PEW) is the more outgoing of the two girls, though she is a bit timid as well. She is such a cutie and loves to free roam and would need plenty of time to do so in her forever home. She also does not like being held, but likes getting scritches on the cheeks and chin! She loves nesting in a box of felt scraps and goes nuts for mealworms.

I’m currently working on litterbox training them and teaching them to come when called, as well as just getting them to come out of their shell some more. Neither of them have ever bit me, despite attempts to pick them up, get in their space a little, etc. They’re currently living with my own pet rat, an older, outgoing and affectionate girl who I’m hoping will rub off positively on them 🙂

Blossom and Bubbles are super curious little girls who need a loving home where their personalities can shine. They definitely need a cage with plenty of enrichment as they are very active. They are wonderful girls and would make great companions to someone patient who has plenty of time to give them and experience the rewards of helping their confidence grow :)”
