UPDATE 11/26/23:
“I was so excited to meet Kevin and Wallace! Kevin is a dumbo eared dark gray self rex coated rat, and Wallace is a dumbo eared dark gray Berkshire standard ear rat. Both boys enjoy exploring inside and out of the cage, independently for now. They are given free roam from their cage across the top of my sofa to my recliner; they will spend the whole day checking things out and returning to their cage for bathroom needs. I also think both boys have not been handled much. While they are gentle when taking food and being touched, they squeak or squirm when being removed from the cage. Both boys are exuberant eaters of Oxbow adult rat food, seed and dry pasta mix, fresh fruits and vegetables including apples, pears, raw kale, cooked winter squash, and carrots.
Wallace (or Wally) just turned a year old, and decidedly has snuggle bug potential. His mild shyness is continually improving. Wally enjoys having the top of his head and his shoulders gently stroked before being picked up, and he generally will not step into your hand (yet!) Seeing his little white nose peek over the edge of the cage pan to see if he is getting a visitor or a snack is a lot of motivation to go over and say “hi”!
Kevin (or Big Kev) is the more independent of the brothers, and his daring adventures always entertain us. He enjoys gentle pets along his shoulders and back, but is happier exploring his environment than snuggling under a blanket. When being taken out of the cage, even after gentle pets, Kev usually struggles and occasionally kicks and scratches. Other than that, Kevin is a gentle rat who balances his brother nicely.”
