Apollo came to us on 1/10/2023 because his owner’s home status changed and they could no longer keep them.

Fostered by Robyn in Old Orchard Beach, ME.

#2023064N, “Apollo”, Rat, Pink-Eyed-White, , Standard Ears/Standard Coat, Male, DOB: 07/04/2021, Spayed/Neutered?: No

UPDATE 3/18/2023:

“Apollo continues to expand his diet with leafy greens, nori, carrots, scrambled eggs, and waffles! He is also much more proficient at climbing into fleece hammocks, remodeling cardboard boxes, and stowing food and napkins at a convenient spot.

Apollo will always come to sniff a hand when the cage door is approached or opened. He will sleep in your lap under a blanket, and likes snoozing in the “box of the week” after cage cleaning. I have also noticed that he really enjoys chewing wood, so he always has several blocks available to keep him busy. From my observation, he does not chew plastic.”

UPDATE 2/14/2023:

“Apollo is an approximately 18 month old pink eyed white who is learning that human interaction means treats and fun! He is gentle when being handled and has never attempted to bite me, but he does kick and scratch if startled. He startles relatively easily, and will scurry and hide if you come towards him with sudden movement, and will scream or hiss if he is picked up too fast. However, once he settles in on your lap, he enjoys having his head stroked and his chin scratched. Apollo is also enjoying the introduction of new foods to his diet: previously he was feed mostly seed mix. Now he will run to the front of the cage for kale, blueberries, red bell pepper, and cooked whole wheat spaghetti. He does not seem to care for pears or cooked rice.

Apollo is allowed to free wande in the living room across the furniture every evening. He returns to his cage to use the bathroom, then will usually go back to the sofa to grab a treat. Now that he knows the swinging strips of fleece are safe, he has learned that hammocks are a fun place to sleep and to get up to see the room around him. My cats are rat-savvy and do not try to bother him, but adopters should be aware that Apollo is not familiar with cats and demonstrates no fear around them, often going up to their flanks to sniff them before being removed by one of us to a safer spot. He is being fed Oxbow adult rat food mixed with cheerios, whole wheat pasta, pumpkin seeds, lentils, and soybeans and supplemented with fresh food from whatever dinner I am making that evening.

It’s been fun to watch Apollo evolve from hiding in his Sputnik when anyone approached his cage to roaming around the furniture to grab the snack of the evening.”
