Baden came to us on 6/15/19 because his owner had too many pets. He was neutered on 7/16/19 but still has proven to be aggressive to both humans and other rats. Over time he has been able to calm down in an environment with routine and familiarity, but his best friend is still the hamster he can smell from the next cage over.

UPDATE 7/7/19:

“Baden is skittish and fearful. I am currently just keeping him calm and slowly working with him on trust.

He likes to use a wheel, and will take food nicely. He often runs away and gets scared when he hears other rats but likes his hamster neighbor. He is skittish around humans, but slowly learning to trust us with help of cage curtains.

He has been around a cat and Syrian hamsters, although separated by cage bars. He is curious about the hamsters and ignores the cat. He has bitten out of fear and when I’ve cleaned his cage.”

UPDATE 12/11/20:

“Badens best friend [his hamster neighbor] has passed away. He’s been really depressed and really needs a new friend. The caveat being, of course, he doesn’t like rat friends. Silly dude. On a positive note, apparently in his depressive state Baden has decided a human lap is better than nothing.”
