Never underestimate the power of banana chips, their favorite! Each girl will now take treats from my hand and resist running off when I move suddenly. Lila, the most brave of the bunch, comes running to get her treat as soon as I open the door. Mom Kamaji and daughter Lola will then follow. Lula is the most skittish of the bunch and will sometimes not leave her cozy hammock for treats.

I am confident they will tolerate handling with more patience and love, however they may never appreciate a good cuddle haha! But what they lack in snuggle skills, they make up for in silly, adorable antics! They steal food from each other, bolt around the cage, and greet me through the bars. They make me laugh all the time! If you are an experienced rat person looking for a fun challenge, these are your girls!

If one is wondering how I tell the daughters apart, Lila is the bravest and has the darkest snout of the three and Lola has the lightest.”

UPDATE 4/28/17:

“The girls are doing well. With some food incentive I can pet them with my whole hand. They are much more confident and recover quickly from being startled. When I clean their cage they normally hide in their hammocks, but yesterday they were climbing all over the place, one even climbed out of the cage!”

UPDATE 9/23/17 on Lila and Lola:

“Lila is filled with curiosity and is super adventurous. She will check out every corner of the room and is obsessed with her yogurt drops. She is trusting to try new things from my hand and has the prettiest little gray nose.

Lola is a quiet girl that loves shredding and building forts. She is always excited to try new fruits and veggies and will explore the outside of her cage when she feels safe. Lola will be a very sweet companion once you gain her trust. It’s hard to see in her pictures but she has an adorable, very subtle smudge of Siamese color on her nose.”

UPDATE 10/4/17 on Kamaji and Lula:

“Kamaji and Lula are doing well! The past few weeks Kamaji has been itching to get out of the cage, and will climb on me briefly before running back to her cage. The girls are more comfortable with me and I am more confident I can catch them up. They are pretty good at getting into the crate, so I use that to transfer them to the play room. Carrying them around is still not an option, as they will do anything in their power to get to the floor if they feel restrained in any way. I am confident free-range time helps with this because they have the choice of whether or not they want to engage with me, which gives them confidence. They often approach me for a quick sniff when out for play time. Surprisingly Lula seems to lead the charge when they first get out!”

Kamaji

Lila

Lola

[1

post-14520","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
https://mainelyratrescue.org/rattieblog2/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/716b4a63-0cf0-4e2d-ad4d-b4b2e9d0260b_zps8wemtyjd.jpg
["GET
