Michigan Girls

Frances, Dolores, Tempe, Bella, Penny & Judy flew into Portland Maine’s Jet Port just after midnight on October 13, 2008. Having flown from Ypsilanti, Michigan with flight delays along the way, the girls were frightened and confused and quickly settled into one of MRR’s jacuzzi hammocks for the night.

The girls came to us from HVRR, anther rat rescue in Michigan. HVRR got them from a local shelter who was not equiped to handle rats, let alone 45 of them! The rats, yes 45, were turned into the shelter after an eviction and arrived to HVRR in over crowded tanks (one 30 gallon and 2 ten gallons) with no food or water, no toys or hammocks, infested with parasites and extremely dirty and smelly! Kia, HVRR’s owner/operator, cleaned them up, set them up in clean, roomy cages and put out the word for help. MRR responded and soon Kia used her own money to buy plane tickets for 6 of the rats and sent them on their way to Maine.

Just as we were told, the girls arrived unsocialized but friendly. It was obvious that their original care takers (if that’s what you can call them) didn’t handled them much, if at all. They were curious but cautious of people but we were confident our wonderful foster families had the skills they needed to help the Michigan 6 overcome their fears.

The girls have been in their foster homes for over 2 months now and we finally feel comfortable enough with their social skills to send them to forever homes. The girls were split into 3 groups of 2 so we will give each pair their own page.

You know what to do next!
