He was neutered on 9/1/10 so can start living with the ladies on 9/22! Willie Nelson is a sweet and adorable boy who was turned into a Maine shelter by parents when their son moved out. After three months, MRR was able to take him out, he is a big love! He is a delightful boy! He’s an average sized buck. Willie is a sound sleeper, it takes him a minute to come to and wake up enough to come out to greet you if he has been sleeping. He also greets anyone happily at the door, and is kind to fingers! Willie loves being scritched and smooshed. He has two incredibly adorable spots on each side of his “pee-pee.” During picture time Willie was rather quick at scaling the back of the chair and exploring the table above! He’s a bit more curious and adventurous than Kenny Rogers.

Neutered on 9/1, can be introed to ladies on 9/22.

This HUGE squishy man rat was taken out of a Maine shelter where he had been for three months. His owner was heartbroken at having to give him up, he was her “baby” but she was going to college and he could not go with her.

While at the shelter these are the observations made of Kenny:
“He is quite the squish. Very personable, will run right up to the door to greet. Greets fingers nicely! He’s a “two-hander” he’s more uncomfortable being picked up with one hand. During out time he was calm and collected. I wouldn’t call him scared or timid at all. He did squeak at me once yesterday when i quickly went in and snatched him up. This could be because I used one hand, or I was too fast. Seems like a calm fellow, so the person should also be calm. Though he is not aggressive with people, he may be aggressive with other animals. During cleaning, his cage will be put on the floor, once there was a rabbit running around on the floor, Kenny was seen puffed up and poofing/lunging at the cage. (this was just an observation)”

In his new foster home, two darling little boys enamoured of Kenny live below him and he has been very mellow, no signs of aggression whatsoever! He will soon be tried with other rats to see how he does.

8/29/10 Update From Foster Home:
Joe is the opposite of his cagemate Kramer. He is petite and outgoing. Joe is curious and playful. Always looking for adventure. He is not content to sit in a pouch but will immediately climb out and up your body to perch on your shoulder. He does not want to miss a thing!

Kramer is a calm boy, who is a bit aloof but comes out of the cage easily. He is very content to snuggle in a pouch or just have head pets. Very mellow and sweet. Not a squirmy boy.

Joe

“Emma”, Black Bareback with Head Spot, Standard Ears/Coat, Female, DOB 02/01/10

Emma was a pet store rattie purchased just a few weeks before her owners had to move to a new home where they learned that rats were not allowed. She went to a shelter in Maine and as soon as a foster home opened up, Mainely Rat Rescue took her out along with her cagemate Lacy. She is now living happily in our wonderful foster home with Lacy, Tigger and Eeyore.

Here is what Skyler, her foster mom, has to say about her:
“Emma is a little bit of a daredevil and can get very adventurous if you let her - surprising facts considering the fact that the first time I took her out of the cage, she squeaked as if in pain every time I petted her, even while she was hidden inside the pocket of my hoodie.

Emma is unique in that she will sometimes choose to sleep on top of the igloo or somewhere else away form the others and when everyone is enjoying out of the cage time Emma usually ventures off by herself, exploring at a much quicker rate than the others. Her independence, however, should not be mistaken for banishment and rejection by the other ratties as they love giving her a thorough grooming and playing chase with her. Emma has been making great progress and is great for anyone who likes a curious rat who wants nothing more than to be around humans.

She is litter trained and very intelligent, with the potential to learn tricks for anyone interested. I have been trying to teach her ‘spin’…we’ll see how it goes. Her favorite cagemate is Eeyore, though she gets along with everyone. They like to run in the wheel at the same time and share a stockpile of food. Emma is making Eeyore less of a stubborn boy and has really encouraged him to explore more often and come to the cage door instead of waiting for people to come to him.”

“Lacy”, American Blue, Dumbo Ears, Standard Coat, Female, DOB 08/01/09

Lacy is an adorable and sweet girl who was surrendered to an animal shelter in Maine because her owners had moved to a new home where rats were not welcome. Mainely Rat Rescue took her and her new cagemate Emma out of the shelter as soon as we had an opening. She is now living harmoniously in one of our wonderful foster homes with Emma, Tigger and Eeyore. We would like to see her go home with Tigger as they have become close friends.

Here is what Skyler, their foster mom has to say about her:
“Lacy acts as the maternal caretaker of the bunch. She is constantly grooming someone or organizing the bedding in the igloo. Lacy love to snuggle down in between the boys, Tigger and Eeyore, who both seem to really respect her, as they bring her morsels of food, even prized chicken bones, which most rats would never give up to anyone. Lacy loves being out of the cage and to see her stare at you through the cage bars with those eyes and those ears, her wish is usually granted.

She is insistent on riding on your shoulder once out of the cage and is actually quite calm for a female - able to sit and relax on your lap while you watch TV or read a book - just as long as she can sniff the surroundings with all her might - never seen a rat so curious of all the smells surrounding her! Lacy is really good with kids as is her best buddy Tigger. Just recently, my 8 year old neighbor had no trouble holding Tigger in her arms while Lacy sat on her shoulder! Lacy is a very clean cagemate and literally became litter trained in 2 days. She would do well in any household.”

“Tigger”, Siamese, Standard Coat/Ears, Neutered Male, DOB 3/26/10

Tigger is from The Winnie-The-Pooh Cast, and is currently living with his brother, Eeyore, as well as Lacy and Emma. Tigger is especially good friends with Lacy, and we would love to see them go home together (pictured with Lacy below).

8/25/10 Update on Tigger:
“Tigger has really become a lot more outgoing with the arrival of the ladies. He sprints to the cage door whenever a person even walks by and loves being held by anyone. He enjoys being out of the cage anytime, whether the environment be crazy or serene. He has taken to helping me babysit my neighbors along with Lacy by grooming the girls and just ‘keeping an eye (and some paws) on them’. Tigger is the perfect rat for anyone as he will react to any situation and to any person with excitement for just getting to be around humans.”

7/7/10 Update from Foster Home:
Tigger is becoming more affectionate and loves to snuggle but also explore outside of the cage when you give him the chance.” Tigger is not quite as bound and determined to get your attention as the others; rather, he believes that you should be more focused on getting his attention. He begs for you to notice him. His stubbornness exists on a level that is not a nuisance but in a way to bring a laugh to anyone visiting the cage. He is very funny in that he does not even bother to run to the cage door but will look directly at you from the igloo, poking his head out as far as possible without moving one paw. Once you get him from the igloo, which he accepts without biting or protest, he will burrow into your hoodie pocket or the nook of you arms. If greeted by a hand, he will curiously sniff it and maybe give it a lick or two. During feeding time he runs up to the cage door and waits until another boy has his mouth open to take the morsel and will sneak in and take it. Tigger does need to work on snatching food, but making him wait his turn by holding the food out so he has to reach to take it, has proven to help him in his efforts to be more gentle and patient. During free run, Tigger prefers to stay close by, giving you the opportunity to give him the attention he believes he rightfully deserves. Tigger would make an excellent addition to any home looking for a calm rat who will offer many amusing moments with his frivolous stubbornness but at the same time always eagerly await your visit to the cage and any time he can spend with you out of the cage.

First report on the boys:
“These boys would be excellent companions to anyone with a lonely rat or rats as they did not so much as nip each other once. They all sleep in the igloo stacked up on each other! At first they were shy about coming out from hiding for even food and treats. After tediously coaxing every boy to come out for some cooked veggies, they realized that only good things can come when you go to the cage door and that is what they always do any time someone walks by. I am learning more and more about their personalities every day. These boys are irresistible in their personalities in that they are always looking to please, in that the beauty industry should definitely be envious of whatever their secret is to such soft fur, and in their ability to quickly adjust to new situations, new cage mates, and different humans. They are all great outside of the cage; the boys prefer a pocket, with Eeyore occasionally climbing up to the shoulder. They are on the way to being litter trained with surprising success so far, are great around kids, keep the cage very clean, and beg to be pampered by everyone. Each baby boy is an adorable, affectionate rat that would make a great addition to a loving home.”

“Eeyore”, Black Self, Standard Coat/Ears, Neutered Male, DOB 3/26/10

Eeyore is from The Winnie-The-Pooh Cast and is currently living with his brother, Tigger as well as Emma and Lacy. Keep reading for updates!

8/25/10 Update:
“Eeyore has always had a bit of stubborn streak in him in that he doesn’t want to get out of the hammock for a treat or to picked up. However, with arrival of Emma, his alleged girlfriend at the moment, he has been encouraged to mosey down to the cage door and see what’s up. This has given him many positive results including a lot more treats and head scritches. Needless to say, Eeyore is much more responsive to people opening the cage door and will most of the time greet you, if not, at least look right at you to beg for a treat or out of the cage time.”

7/7/10 Update from Foster Home:
Eeyore is becoming a little less stubborn and even shockingly will come to see you sometimes rather than make you come to him. Eeyore is a very thoughtful and easy-going rat. He loves to play around in the cage with the other rats, your hand, or by himself. He hides any precious piece of food behind the wheel, not realizing that Tigger is waiting on the ramp to steal it as soon as the opportunity arises. When Eeyore does realize that someone has stolen his food he goes absolutely crazy and runs down to the bottom level, acting spastic, changing his running direction at any given moment. Once, when there was a tissue box down there he went crazy in it, making the box shake across the cage during a most hyper moment. He likes to explore during free run and always wants to go beyond the realms of the room. He is always sniffing under the door or looking over a ledge to figure out what lies beyond.

Eeyore likes to sleep at the bottom of the rat pile and enjoys burrowing his face amongst the others so that only his tail is visible. He enjoys being held outside the cage and will wait patiently to be picked up, despite his exploratory nature. He likes to walk around on the couch when you are sitting there but when he has his mind set on the next place he wants to go, which is naturally the floor or coffee table, he will sit there sniffing, thinking about how he could get there and is determined not to move. Eeyore is a great rat for anyone who wants to have a rat they can show off with his cleverness and awareness of everything going on around him. He understands and responds to your actions in a way that lets you know how much he enjoys your company and appreciates your care. Eeyore would do well in a home where he could sit on your shoulder or arm while you are in the house and just watch whatever you are doing, with an occasional venturing off.

<strike>“Almond Tea”, Platinum Self, Standard Coat/Ears, Neutered Male, DOB 4/17/10</strike> ADOPTED

8/1/10 Update from the foster home:
Apple Dumplin’: He was just introduced and housed with my six other rats a week ago and has learned so much from example with the others. He is playing a lot more and is very tolerant of the humans around him and is really turning into a wonderful little man. I can only imagine how far he will come while being with all his new friends. He has a bit of a fingernail fettish, and will gently nibble on your nails while being pet!

Almond Tea: He has come so far socially in the last week since he was introduced and housed with my other six rats. He has quickly bonded with them and is learning by example with them. He has become so much more playful in just the last week. I look forward to watching him bloom into the little lovebutt I know he will be! He adores his brother, Apple Dumplin’, and on warmer days he will take a dip in his wading pool (old pie plate with a little cool water in it), or occasionally run on his wheel.

6/26/10 Update from the foster home: Beautiful guys! They have great personalities and come to the front of the cage to investigate what is going on. They enjoy their time out of the cage and play together. They are very gentle while taking food from your hand. They can still be a bit skittish with sudden moves or sounds. We are working on being held-not their favorite place to be, but will tolerate for a short while. They all enjoy your touch while on solid ground. Cats are not a problem, my cat Murphy always has to see what I am doing while I am at their cage. Favorite treat is Vegetable Baby Mum-Mum Rice Rusks, the crinkle of this package opening is one sound that doesn’t bother them at all! Mama Strawberry Shortcake and her litter (named after all her friends) were surrendered to MRR because of accidental breedings. They are so lucky their previous owner had the sense to call us when he did, otherwise this litter would have ended up like the Happy Days Clan.

“Athena,” Black Hooded, Dumbo Ears, Standard Coat, Spayed Female, Estimated DOB 10/1/09
“Sybil,” Black Hooded, Dumbo Ears, Rex Coat, Spayed Female, DOB 3/17/10

Athena had a litter of babies on 2/13/10. She was surrendered to MRR and sent to her foster home just a few days later to raise her babies. They say rats can “store sperm” to use at a later date or delay pregnancy in some way. Up ’til recently we never really believed that to be true, but on March 17th, Athena gave birth to ANOTHER litter! Having never been with a male in her foster home, we have no explanation at how she could have conceived again so we have to go with the “stored sperm” theory.

Sybil is from Athena’s second litter. As the babies were born on St. Patrick’s Day, they all have Irish names. You can read more about her littermates here.

9/6/10 Update from Foster Home:

Athena & Sybil have made some new friends! They are currently living with Fig Boot and Rhubarb, and have paired off with them.

Athena’s best friend, Fig Boot, has really helped her personality shine through. She has simply blossomed with his friendship, and we would love to see them go home together. Athena is on the quieter side, and she has become quite the snuggler. She will readily come to the door of the cage, especially at treat time. While she still doesn’t like the act of getting picked up (she mostly freezes up - nothing aggressive), she is fine once out of the cage. But she still does prefer to come out with Fig Boot than solo. Fig Boot is very outgoing and loves to play. Athena has a calming effect on him, and he livens her up. It’s a great match. This pair would probably do better with older, more mellow children or with adults.

Sybil and Rhubarb have become buddies. Sybil remains a very friendly, easy-going rat. She is an excellent shoulder rat when I’m at the computer. She is always happy to come out and play, snuggle, or get treats. She and Rhubarb are much of the same tempermant, and they compliment each other beautifully. Sybil is extremely easy-going when it comes to meeting other rats, as is Rhubarb. They would do well in many different family settings.

Athena is more easily startled than Sybil. She loves attention from you while she’s in her cage. She does enjoy running around when she’s having free range time, but she loves to have something handy to either run into or burrow under when there are loud noises. Athena’s favorite place to be in on your lap, under a blanket, getting petted. Remove the blanket and she’s a bit nervous, but that will go in time. Athena had to have the tip of her tail removed by the vet, which makes it easier to tell her and Sybil apart from a distance! Athena will thrive in a household with adults or older children.

Sybil is still a baby, and loves to play! She has been around humans she trusts her whole life, so she is much more outgoing than her mother. Sybil is a poor rex, and hardly has any curly hair at all, but she is very soft. Sybil loves to run around on our couch while we watch tv. She’s perfected the art of begging for treats to the point that you actually believe that it was YOUR idea to go into the kitchen, chop up a banana, and give her all of the choice bits. She may have some hypnotic capabilities in her bloodline…hmm. Athena and Sybil are currently fostered with Philip and Andreas and Sybil has loved having other babies to play with.

“Fig Boot”, Platinum Self, Standard Coat/Ears, Neutered Male, DOB 4/17/10
“Rhubarb”, Platinum Self, Standard Coat/Ears, Neutered Male, DOB 4/17/10

Fig Boot and Rhubarb are from The Strawberry Shortcake Friends. They are some of the friendliest rats around, and both just love being involved in your life! Fig Boot is the first to the door of the cage, but Rhubarb is never far behind. They are still young with a lot of energy, but they are getting better about sitting on shoulders. Mostly they sit for a few minutes and then decide that there are other things that need exploring!

Fig Boot & Rhubarb were recently neutered, and entire vet’s office fell completely in love with them! The vet tech made us promise that we would tell potential adopters that “these are the sweetest little creatures on four legs!” We couldn’t agree more! They will make a great addition to any home.

9/6/10 Update from Foster Home:
“The boys are doing so well! They have the sweetest dispositions, and are so much fun to be around. Whoever adopts these boys is going to be really lucky. They are currently living with Athena & Sybil, and they seem to have made best friends with them. We would love to see Fig Boot go home with Athena and Sybil go home with Rhubarb.” Check out the girls on their page: Athena & Sybil.

8/23/10 Update from Foster Home:
“The boys are fantastic! My mother came to visit, and as soon as we walked in the door she fell in love with Fig Boot and Rhubarb! Everyone who has met them has had the same reaction - their personalities are that sweet and immediately apparent!

The first week that the boys were with us was the week that they were neutered and had some complications. They were understandably a little nervous to come out of the cage - after all, every time they came out we were poking at their hurting parts! As soon as they got over the soreness, their true personalities came shining through! They are just the sweetest, most gentle, friendliest, and cuddliest boys! They are still quite young and they LOVE to play. These boys will be perfect for a family with any level of experience and with people of any age.”

Mrs. C. is the mother of the Happy Days litter. Please be aware that this story has a “tear-jerker warning” attached to it.

Update from foster mom:
7/26/10
Mrs. C. has really come out of her shell. She is litter box trained and loves to eat new foods. She is busy and will sit on your shoulder, but not for long. If you are walking with her then she is fine, but to sit still or not move she does not last long!

6/25/10
Mrs. C. is still somewhat shy. She holds back and takes things in. She will snuggle but gets a little figgity. She wants to see what is going on. She also plays well with others. I know with time Mrs C. will be the best rat. She still holds back because of where she came from.

“Paulina,” Black Irish, Standard Coat/Ears, Female, DOB 3/29/10

Thomasia and Paulina, who are sisters and partners in crime, are fantastic young ladies, full of energy and mischief, yet very sweet, interactive and friendly. They enjoy exploring and eating treats, especially fruit smoothies. Thomasia is the larger of the two, Paulina has the belly spots. Thomasia and Paulina are currently living with Fig Boot & Rhubarb and Athena & Sybil. Ask about adopting one of these girls with their friends, or about them going home as singles.

9/6/10 Update from Foster Home:
Paulina & Thomasia are such fantastic rats! They are so friendly, and love to run right up to you and give kisses. They are extremely curious, and hardly ever stand still - there’s too much to explore! Thomasia would define Heaven as a place where she could be with a human all day long. Running and jumping would be encouraged. And treats would be hidden in every nook & cranny. Paulina’s Heaven would be about 50% time with people and 50% time snuggled in a warm hammock. They are both sweethearts and will make a great addition to any home. They can go as singles to a home with other rats, they can go as a pair, or talk with our Adoption Coordinator about other rats who are currently living with them.

Paulina: Somewhat smaller; not at all afraid of people or having fun exploring and getting into places she shouldn’t be.
Thomasia: A sweet and calm little lady; certainly playful and interested in people-two very small, cute white belly dots.

The girls currently enjoy sneaking into the bottom drawer of my bureau to hang out. I’ve given up and evicted my socks.

“Farley”, Beige Berkshire, Standard Ears/Coat, Neutered Male, DOB 12/8/09

Murray and Farley, along with 23 other rats, were surrendered to MRR after their rescuer found herself unable to care for them following a divorce. Everyone was living together in one small cage and money for food was running out. MRR came pretty much in the nick of time. All the rats were slightly malnourished and scared and there were intact boys and girls living together in that small cage.

Once in MRR custody, the large group of rats were placed into smaller groups and sent to loving foster homes.

8/29/10 Update from Foster Home:
Murray is a sweetie who does not care for the picking up part of being picked up, but if he can snuggle in he is just fine. He is still shy but does not run away, though occasionally he will amble away! He is mellow and observant. Like Farley, he enjoys hoodies.

Farley is very curious and seems undaunted by my playful dog. He is the alpha of the duo. He loves to snuggle in a hoodie, and will come to the cage door to greet you. He will thrive in a home with older children or adults.

Murray:

“Shamus”, Black & White Bareback with Headspot, Standard Ears, Rex Coat, Neutered Male, DOB 3/17/10
“Declan”, Black & White Hooded, Dumbo Ears, Standard Coat, Neutered Male, DOB 3/17/10

Shamus and Declan are from Athena’s Irish Bunch.

Shamus and Declan both are a little on the shy side, yet they are also curious, wanting attention and adventures. Declan tends to sleep in a corner where he can watch what goes on, Shamus loves the hammock and being hidden so he can sleep. Both of them are more early morning boys who tend to sleep during the day (though Declan will come say hello whenever we stop by the cage, and both come out for treats), and come early evening they are looking for attention. Whenever we take either one out for some one-on-one they are very nervous at first but quickly warm up, and when put back in they keep running to the door to see if they will be able to get out again. They do not get to free-range as the foster home they are in has too many places for them to get lost. They have been exposed to children, cats and dogs, and plenty of travel–all of which they don’t seem to mind. Both of them nibble on fingernails, and gently nip the fingers to see if they have food in them. If Shamus is tired and doesn’t want to be bothered he will give a warning nip, but never hard enough to break the skin or leave a mark. Both of these guys are really sweet, and with the right home, they will blossom into the best of ratties.

Declan is very fast and shy, not always willing to go where his brothers have gone but once he’s out, he loves to explore and cuddle.

Shamus is a bit skittish at first but VERY willing to explore and socialize. Always runs to the door after he’s back to see if there’s another opportunity to come and visit.
